Old Glory

People often ask me the best way to light the American Flag. Of course, this process has become increasingly hard with the onset of Dark Skies Ordinances. Let me just say that I wish that lighting the flag of the United States of America would be an exception to this guideline. Aslo, like many things, if done properly it's not near as obtrusive to the night sky.
Off the soap box, back to the topic. There are two ways to light Old Glory, either with in ground fixtures or flood lights. The wattage should typically be 175W and the distribution should ALWAYS be spots..
The layout should include 3 fixtures to insure that the flag is illuminated no matter the direction of the wind. The last thing to consider is the setback distance. If using in ground fixtures the set back should be 1/3 or 1/2 the length of the flag. If floods are being used the setback ratio is 1/2 or equal to the pole height...
